SUMMARY: This position sets up, operates various pieces of equipment to fabricate materials. Monitoring machine performance and utilization are essential. Set up, troubleshoot and assist operators in day to day operations. Other responsibilities include: Manage mill tooling and complete set-up sheets. Working conditions include restricted movement, standing for long periods of time, dirty environment, extreme temperatures, intense noise, hazardous materials, lifting or carrying heavy objects.

Examples of Duties:
  • Fabricate a wide variety of metal and plastic components through the set-up and operation of CNC machines, saws, and similar equipment.
  • Use and understand precision measurement tools such as calipers, micrometers and gages.
  • Operate hand tools in the fabrication of parts.
  • Control the operation of the machine by monitoring dials and gauges.
  • Listen to the machine for sounds that indicate problems. Troubleshoot to diagnose the problem and determine proper corrective actions.
  • Determine specifications by reading blueprints and other documents.
  • Change worn tools and perform routine maintenance.
  • Ensure that fabricated parts meet specifications.
  • Depress buttons, toggles, and switches for machining operation.
  • Observe numerical displays on control panel and compares with data on process sheet to verify dimensional adjustments, feed rates, and speeds of machining cuts.
  • Maintain clean and orderly work area. Follow all safety procedures.
  • Maintain records of production.
  • Monitor setup times by using clocks and minimize down time in manufacturing.
  • Has the authority to stop production when nonconforming parts are detected.
  • Debur part, as required.
  • Responsible for loading parts, operating controls, setting offsets, edits and inspection of quality parts for conformance to requirements.
  • Maintain quality and quantity of parts produced.
  • Follow all shop rules as they relate to production, scrap and quality.
  • Complete and maintain set-up sheets.
  • Manage tooling for mill department.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Possesses a minimum of  5 years experience operating CNC machines in a manufacturing environment.
  • Possess knowledge of Gibbs, Mastercam, and be proficient in G Code.
  • Possess ability to set-up, and verify process.
  • Must be adaptable to a changing work environment, competing demands and is able to deal with frequent change, delays or unexpected events.
  • Must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move 100 pounds.
  • Must possess effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.
  • Follow safe manufacturing and material handling practices
  • Follow written and verbal details to complete assignments or jobs.
  • Communicate with managers, leads, engineers, production control, quality and other shop personnel for assignments and to resolve machining or quality issues.
  • Understand and adhere to employee handbook policies.
  • Record time accurately including time, attendance, and labor reporting.
  • Accurately count and record production activity.
  • Compute decimal equivalents, interchange fractions. Compute dimensions using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions and decimals.
  • Study and interpret drawings, manuals, specifications or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces, sequence of operations and setup requirements.
  • Detect equipment malfunctions or out of tolerance machining and adjusts machine, within capabilities, controls, or control media as required to insure quality of production. Reports all machine malfunctions to maintenance
